Steering Wheel or Column Vibrations

If you’re experiencing vibration in the steering wheel or column while driving, the connection between the steering box or rack and pinion may be the culprit. Whenever possible, use a rag joint to isolate and absorb unwanted vibration.
If space is tight and a rag joint won’t fit, consider using a compact vibration damper. These devices are only slightly larger in diameter than a coupler but are longer than a rag joint and can significantly reduce feedback through the steering shaft.

Do You Need to Reduce Pump Pressure?

In most cases, reducing power steering pump pressure is unnecessary—and it won’t make the steering feel less sensitive. In fact, lowering pressure can make the vehicle harder to steer during low-speed maneuvers or when parked.
If your goal is to increase steering effort or reduce sensitivity at speed, adjusting caster is a much better solution.
  • Manual steering setups typically use around +1° positive caster
  • Power steering systems generally perform best with +3.5° to +7° positive caster
