Hydra Stop Trouble Shooting Help Needed

I haven’t heard a project on a 1957 Chevrolet but someone else started. They installed a Hydro stop and a CPP power steering pump in the vehicle. The issue that I’m having is that the power steering pump is getting so hot after the car runs two minutes that is trying to burn the paint off of it. I’m also getting a lot of noise to the pump when I push the brake pedal. I have done the best I could with getting all the air out of the system by turning the power steering left and right and cycling, pushing the brake on and off.

I installed a new pump just in case that was the issue. I could use some help troubleshooting the issues that I’m having. Thank you.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for reaching out. First and most important, please avoid running the car for any long period until we get this figured out, as it can damage both the pump and the HydraStop. We are here to help you get this working the way it should.

From what you are describing, there may be two things going on. The first is plumbing. If the lines are not routed correctly the system can overheat very quickly. That can also explain why the pump makes noise when you press the brake pedal. The other possibility is that the pump or HydraStop is not getting enough fluid. These units need at least 2.5 GPM of flow. If you are using a remote reservoir, make sure the feed line is a true 1/2 inch inside diameter with a -10AN fitting. Some reservoirs have an adapter that reduces the feed to 3/8 inch and that will starve the pump.

I am attaching a plumbing diagram that shows the proper layout. Compare it to your setup to confirm everything is matched up.

If you still have questions or want us to walk through the steps together, please give us a call while you are with the car at 800-522-5004 and choose the tech option. We can troubleshoot in real time and get you back on track. We are always glad to help, so never hesitate to reach out.

And for anyone else reading, if you ever run into a similar issue or have questions about your setup, please post here or give us a call. We are always happy to support your projects.
